From Coasting to Clarity: How One Conference Sparked a New Vision for the Future of Accounting

“Deep connections that foster a sense of belonging and motivate you to be the best professional and person you can be.”

When this firm owner attended BTG 2025 through the support of an Accounting Cornerstone Foundation (ACF) scholarship, he wasn’t starting from scratch.

In fact, by most standards, his business was doing well.

But something felt off.

“I would describe it as coasting,” he said. “I had built my business to a certain level, and I knew I was ready for a quantum leap forward.”

What he needed wasn’t more experience. It was a shift in how he was thinking about growth, leadership, and what was possible next.

The Starting Line: When Growth Slows Down

Before attending the conference, his biggest challenges weren’t technical, they were foundational.

He was thinking deeply about leadership, team building, and what it really meant to create a healthy business, both financially and mentally.

“I knew to build something impactful, I needed to become a better leader,” he shared.

At the same time, he was looking for something more than just tactical answers. He wanted to be in a room with people who were thinking bigger,  about business, about life, and about the future of the profession.

That’s what initially drew him to apply for the scholarship.

A trusted colleague described the conference as a rare blend of business strategy, mental health, physical well-being, and personal development.

“I knew I wanted to be connected to people who cared about those things.”

The Turning Point: Real Conversations, Real Growth

At the conference, something shifted almost immediately.

“My biggest takeaway was that everyone is just figuring things out,” he said.

In a world shaped by polished social media and curated success, being in the room with peers told a different story, one that felt more honest and more human.

“It’s not as polished as you think. And that’s okay. It’s more real.”

That realization brought a sense of relief, but it also opened the door to something bigger: connection.

The most impactful moments didn’t just happen during sessions. They happened in conversations between sessions — the unplanned exchanges where ideas were shared, challenges were unpacked, and trust was built.

“There’s no comparison to virtual learning,” he said. “Those side conversations are where the real growth happens.”

Hearing leaders speak openly, especially moments of vulnerability from speakers like Randy Crabtree, set a tone that made the entire experience more meaningful.

It created an environment where people could show up honestly, not just professionally.

After the Conference: A Shift in Direction

When he returned home, the changes weren’t just internal, they were immediate and practical.

His mindset shifted. His confidence as a leader grew. And his curiosity expanded, especially around emerging technology.

Inspired by sessions on AI and innovation, he began exploring new tools and rethinking how his firm could evolve.

“I started testing different AI solutions and learning what was being built specifically for accounting,” he said.

But the biggest shift wasn’t just what he did, it was how he saw the opportunity in front of him.

Without the conference, he believes he would have continued on the same path.

“If I hadn’t attended, I’d probably still be coasting,” he said. “Now I feel tapped into the community on a deeper level.”

Building Something New

Since attending, his business has evolved in a significant way.

He’s hired his first team member, allowing him to focus more on growth and vision. But more importantly, he’s redefined what his firm stands for.

Moving beyond traditional bookkeeping and accounting services, he introduced a new concept: Financial Architecture.

This approach focuses on building full-scale financial operations systems using AI and technology, designed for businesses navigating complex, project-based environments.

“This is the path forward for innovative accountants,” he said. “Especially in a world that’s becoming more automated and standardized.”

It’s a shift that reflects both confidence and clarity, not just in what he does, but in the impact he wants to make.

Why In-Person Learning Still Matters

In a profession that has become increasingly virtual, the importance of in-person connection stands out more than ever.

“Most of accounting is virtual now,” he said. “So getting in a room with people creates opportunities you wouldn’t have otherwise.”

For him, the conference wasn’t just about learning,  it was about being in the right environment.

“I’m a firm believer in being in the right rooms.”

And a conference like this brings those rooms together in one place.

The Impact of Being Seen

Receiving the scholarship itself carried meaning beyond financial support.

“It made me feel seen,” he said. “Like the work I’ve been doing actually matters.”

That recognition became fuel,  a reminder to keep pushing forward and to continue stepping into new opportunities.

Paying It Forward

When asked what he would say to someone considering applying for a scholarship, his answer was simple:

“What do you have to lose? Take the chance. Bet on yourself.”

Because sometimes growth doesn’t come from doing more of the same.

Sometimes it comes from stepping into a room that changes how you see everything.

If he had to sum up the experience in one sentence:

“Deep connections that foster a sense of belonging and motivate you to be the best professional and person you can be.”
